Surgery #2

Today Alex had his second "surgery" in the past two weeks, and hopefully his last. He had his appointment with the GI yesterday and the GI felt very strongly that Alex's GI tract needed to be evaluated by endoscopy. So, bright and early this morning, we loaded Alex up in the van to head to the hospital. Fortunately, Alex was able to have apple juice at 8:30a.m., so he was a happy camper and ready to roll. I have to say that I was very impressed with Medical City Dallas Children's Hospital! The nurses were amazing! Their waiting area was amazing! And even though Alex did not go in for his procedure until 11:40a.m., he was happy and distracted almost the entire wait. He played in a really nice playroom and even had a clown come to visit him that blew bubbles for him and gave him a sticker. He felt pretty special! When it was procedure time, we were able to stay with Alex while they put him under and give him a kiss after he fell asleep before we left the room. Everything went very well. We were able to go back to see him after about a half an hour. He was still sound asleep, but I was glad Sam & I could be the first ones he saw. Alex's GI told us that Alex's sphincter between his stomach and esophagus is erythematous, meaning red & swollen. This is causing it to not stay closed, which in turn is allowing the contents of his stomach to come up through it into his esophagus. The GI also took some biopsies that we will get the results from after Memorial Day. For now, Alex's doctor has put him on Prilosec to see if he is happier and has better night time routines. Sam & I are both hoping it works! We are exhausted! Having an almost 15 month old baby never sleep through the night yet is so hard when we have been spoiled for so long!
