Alex's Bump in the Road

We have not had much time to post blog posts around our house lately because life has been very crazy. Especially life with our Alex! Ever since January, Alex has had a downward spiral of illnesses that have been very difficult to get him over. He had RSV in full force for an entire month, 4 ear infections, strep twice (while on antibiotics both times), a stomach bug that had him throwing up off and on for a week and a half, and Thrush ...again! Our poor little guy just kept getting knocked out every time he seemed like he was getting better, and each time he required more aggressive intervention to get him well. The last ear infection and strep episode he had, our pediatrician recommended that Alex have some labs done, go see the ENT, and also go see an immunologist. He had suggested the immunologist several times over the past few months, but I just did not feel we needed to involve a specialist. Alex had his labs done on a Monday, saw the ENT on Tuesday, and on Wednesday we got a call from our pediatrician. He said that some of Alex's labs came back abnormal and that we needed to contact the immunologist right away. I called them that afternoon, and Alex was scheduled to be seen first thing Thursday morning. This knot welled up in the pit of my stomach at the thought of what could be wrong. My amazing friend Shannon told me not to go online to research anything, and for that I am so grateful! I would have been a bigger mess than I already was.
Shannon & I went together the next morning to visit with the immunologist. He said Alex had low immunoglobulin levels and that he needed to run more tests to see what was going on. He also recommended Alex seeing an ENT for tubes and an adenoidectomy. (Funny enough that had already happened the day before!) Of course Alex was screaming his head off during the entire visit, but luckily Shannon came along and took great notes that we went over later. We took Alex across the street to have his labs done, but because they took the maximum amount of blood from him that they could in a day, he had to go back the following Monday to have more blood drawn to complete the tests. They told us the results would take up to 2 weeks to get back, so it was going to be a waiting game for the news of what Alex had going on!
